Addressing Substance Abuse and Comorbidities among Military Personnel, Veterans, and Their Families: A Research Agenda NIDA. For Release January 2, 2009 The goals of the meeting are: Gain an understanding of the intervention needs of military personnel, veterans, and their families regarding substance abuse and associated difficulties; Sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the meeting is organized in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, the Department of Defense Health Affairs, the Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs, the Department of Veteran Affairs, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The National Institute on Drug Abuse is a component of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIDA supports most of the world's research on the health aspects of drug abuse and addiction. The Institute carries out a large variety of programs to inform policy and improve practice.
